I end up using the same VFX elements a lot of the time. I know I’m not alone in this because certain things like blood hits and muzzle flashes have become very recognizable to me. I see the same maybe two dozen elements used everywhere. I find myself having to distort and contort elements into shots that they often don’t work best in. So I decided to start making some of my own and creating them with the flexibility I wish I had from the elements I’ve purchased. To start off with I’ve created a blood spray element from projectile impact or an exit wound or a blade pulled out or whatever you can think of. I’ve rendered the same spray from three angles, straight on, 45 degrees and from the side. It dissipates on its own over time. It doesn’t break frame. I’ve separated the lights into passes so the lighting can be adjusted to suit most conditions. With all that, this ends up being very flexible.
This blood element is provided as 3 2160×4096 .EXR sequences. One from each angle. The EXRs contain a beauty pass as well a separate pass for key, fill and environment light.
If you don’t know how to use EXR passes check out this link. You will be very glad you did!
