It’s that time of year again, in the northern hemisphere, to shoot snow plates! It has been a pretty good winter for capturing snow elements too. I’ve also stopped hesitating about whether or not the snow and lighting conditions look good enough to capture. I just shoot and decide after the fact. It has worked out pretty well so far. I’ve been able to capture a few different snow storms with some different qualities to the snow fall. So now on to the elements.
Download three snow elements.
These are all 6k H.264s at a bit-rate of 250 mbps. So there should be next to no compression artifacts when working with these. I know .braw or ProRes 4444 would be preferable but there is no way my host would let me start slinging 500 GB .zip files without cutting me off.
Screening these over footage works well since there is no alpha baked in but if you want a more naturalistic composite use these plates as a luma matte for an animated solid or try using Video Copilot’s Color Vibrance to easily create an alpha for these elements.
